A double-walled stone fortress

Why was it built?

First, what kind of fortress is it?

Two rings of stone walls on Geumosan

Geumosanseong is a double-walled stone fortress built on Geumosan Mountain (금오산) in the late Goryeo period. It lies inside Geumosan Provincial Park (금오산도립공원).

The outer wall stands about 350 m above sea level, about halfway along the cable car line between the entrance of Geumosan and Daehye Falls (대혜폭포). The inner wall runs along the ridges around a basin inside the fortress, about 850 m above sea level.

No written record tells exactly when the fortress was first built.

Late Goryeo

As Japanese pirates (왜구) raided deep inland again and again, people from nearby Seonsan, Indong, Gaeryeong and Seongju are said to have fled to Geumosan, built the fortress and had soldiers guard it. A military storehouse for food and weapons is also said to have been kept here.

1410 · 1413

Repairs are recorded in 1410 in the Annals of King Taejong (태종실록) and in 1413 in the Gyeongsang-do Sokchan Jiriji (경상도속찬지리지). After that, there are no written records for about 180 years.

Imjin War (임진왜란) · 1595–1597

In 1595 a request was made to repair Geumosanseong and Cheonsaengsanseong (천생산성) and make them a major garrison. That November, Yi Won-ik (이원익), the dochechalsa (도체찰사), told the Border Defense Council that Geumo, Cheonsaeng and other mountain fortresses should be defended first. Over 1595 and 1596 the fortresses were repaired, their palisades strengthened and their troops reinforced, and records say that in the Jeongyu War (정유재란) of 1597 Japanese forces could not easily take them.

  • King Seonjo informed Yi Won-ik and the provincial governors (감사) of this view and ordered them to defend the fortresses.
  • The Geumosanseong entry in the Ilseonji (일선지, 一善志) shows that people and soldiers from nine counties (주현, 州縣) were mobilized to repair the fortress in a short time.
